Here we are in a quite complex city where the charm and degradation coexist with wealth and poverty, music and noise , parks and skyscrapers.
The vital heart of Mexico City is Plaza de la Constitution, around which there are buildings of great historical and artistic interest , such as the National Palace which houses the Office of the Presidential.
The Dolores bell, played in 1810 by the revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo, announced with its touches the beginning of the War of Independence, this event is celebrated every year.
The Major Temple is a building that dates back to the Aztec.
The Cental Alameda city park is the most important and one of the green lungs of the city.
The Bosque Chapultepec is a huge and beautiful park that occupies the entire area of the west city . Inside there is the National Museum of Anthropology with the beautiful and renowned collection on pre-Columbian Mexico.
Xochimilco is the southern district of the city where it is Lake Huetzalin, a relaxing place near the most famous Mexican university and because of that always crowded with young people. Colorful street markets and greenery characterize the area.
Mexico city is a city that should be taken without much planning, a place suitable for those who love good food, entertainment and arts. One thing is for sure, you won’t forget the Mexican food, the strong flavors , aromas and spicy form of a cuisine very much appreciated around the world, which has its roots in pre-Columbian tradition, but it is also influenced by European culture. When you say Mexico you say beans, corn , red pepper, but that would be simplistic … Here we are at the table, you will see that colorful dishes and definitely full of character.
Let’s start with the sopa de limon , a broth of chicken cooked with lemon , chilli , tomato and beer.
The beans, you know, can be considered the symbol of Mexican cuisine, there is a large number of different qualities: rose beans, typical of northern Mexico and the black beans, typical of the south. We must try, then, the frijoles, a bean cream cooked with spices and fried and served with pieces of tortillas.
We also have the curiosity to try the huevos rancheros , fried eggs lying on a tortilla and topped with pepperoni , onion, tomatoes, pepper and oil.
The tortillas , as well as replacing bread, accompany a lot of other dishes and are used as the basis for many recipes.
We definitely don’t miss the burritos , tortillas closed as a dumpling made with wheat flour and stuffed with beans, meat , chicken flavored with chili sauce.
Here comes another dish, empanadas , crescent-shaped, which may be of wheat and corn, stuffed with onions, meat and spices; they can be baked or fried.
Finally, the tacos, which are crispy corn tortillas , are bent in half and served with various kinds of meat, cheese and vegetables .
Sauces are an essential complement of the cuisine of this country, let’s recall one for all … guacamole , a sauce made with avocado , lime, salt, black pepper, prepared with the use of mortar.
Here we are in my kingdom : the dessertsss! We start with marquesotes , typical Mexican biscuits made with eggs , lemon and sugar.
We continue with churros y bunelos, sweets which recalls the choux pastry dough … to die for !!
A taste of capirotada, a Mexican pudding made with bread, dried fruit, lemon zest , coconut, sweet cheese , apples and cinnamon.
And finally, arroz con leche , rice pudding thick and very creamy made with raisins and cinnamon.
Well I must say , even in this city we enjoyed a new and particular food culture … I have a little of heartburn, but my couch and a good espresso will fix everything … Adios Mexico City !
See you next time!
And…the journey continues!
