Welcome to Canada!
We are located in Ottawa ,
its small and not too considered capital , Montreal and Toronto are more known.
Here are perfectly blended ethnicity French and English , as in no other place in the world !
The choice was deliberate because we are talking about a very interesting city
both for its particular geographical location,
both for the intense cultural life that characterizes it.
In 1857 , Queen Victoria choose it as the capital
for its strategic position with respect to the two most important colonies in Canada.
We begin our tour ,
because it is not a large city with all the most important areas can be reached in a short time.
Here we are at Parliament Hill ,
, a green lung where the House and Senate meet ,
the buildings are in pure Gothic and Victorian style.
The Peace Tower ,
clock tower , is always on this wonderful hill ,
is among the most important symbols of the city, it also appears on the back of the banknotes from 50 to 20 canadian dollars
Historically significant is the Rideau Canal,
inaugurated in 1832 ,
being a channel 126 miles long , was created to allow , in case of war with the United States ,
fast transfers of military between the British base in Kingston ( Ontario) and Montreal.
Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco ,
The Rideau Canal has contributed greatly over the years, to increase trade between Canadian cities .
Do not miss the Museum of Civilization,
the most visited in Canada because it allows you to go in detail over 1,000 years of Canadian history .
Do not forget the War Museum
which includes a comprehensive review of findings of World War II
At the end of this short tour of the city , I want to mention one of the most important events that animate the streets of Ottawa in May:
Festival Canadien des Tulipes , the festival of tulips ;
The tradition dates back to the period of World War II ,
when the Queen Juliana of Holland , went to the city to give birth and the room was declared a land of Holland,
to ensure that the heir to the throne was born in the Netherlands.
As a thank you for their hospitality ,
but also for the help given by Canadian soldiers for the liberation of Holland by the Nazis,
The Queen sent for Thanksgiving 100,000 tulips.
Even today, in May, the Netherlands sends 20,000 tulips every year to pay homage to the city , an initiative which has taken the lives Festival.
Let’s sit down at the table and see what the Canadian cuisine offers
being a country with many ethnic groups and cultures , it is also a country with many cuisines :
The French-Canadian cuisine presents the Tourtière ,
savory pie made from a mixture of mixed meats : usually beef and pork with potatoes, onions and many spices and herbs.
It is proposed Oreilles de Christ , bacon fried pork lard … it seems too much for us.. I’ll pass !
While we like Poutine …
French fries topped with chhese and gravy sauce that usually serves to accompanying the meat in the Anglo-Saxon countries .
For the part relating to the Anglo- Canadian cuisine
Yorkshire pudding is a dish representative ,
a batter bread baked often served with meat , usually roast beef and roast turkey .
Then there is a whole other part of the kitchen relative to the various immigrant peoples …
remember the Perogies , a tantalizing pasta stuffed with cheese and meat
Dessert trolley ? … Yes please
Let’s start with Beaver tail ,
it is a sweet focaccia ,
fried in oil , served warm with a delicious variety of fillings : chocolate, lemon and sugar, ice cream , cinnamon, apples …
Butter tart ,
tarts pastry stuffed with butter , raisins, corn syrup
Nainamo bars …
ends happily with these delicious chocolate coconut bars ,
a base of crushed biscuits with addition of coconut ,
chocolate and nuts , a layer of creamy frosting , and over a chocolaty glaze that covers it all .
Hello Ottawa , it was interesting to meet you …
